Those of us who have followed the rantings of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela against the Venezuelan Conference of Bishops, knew it would be a matter of time before words were converted into violence against church leaders,

Sympathizers of Chavez government attack Cardinal Urosa

Caracas, Dec 10, 2007 / 02:17 pm (CNA).- In a letter to his fellow Venezuelan bishops, Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino of Caracas revealed that he was “violently verbally and physically assaulted” last Friday near the city’s Cathedral by a group of Chavez sympathizers.

Chavez is a thug, and so too, sadly, are many of his followers. I'm not surprised it has come to this. Chavez and his thugs have been behaving like this for some time towards the US Ambassador, with the hope they can get him to react in such a manner they can justify expelling him from the country. It is behavior similar to that engaged in by the Cubans, as well - hardly the responsible behavior of a truly democratic leader, but then, I don't think anyone but Chavez truly thinks Chavez is a democratic leader.

Denise Lawson,

Just recently Chávez got into a public argument in Chile with the Prime Minister of Spain, Zapatero, and told Zapatero that his predecessor, Aznar, was a fascist! Imagine Chávez accusing others of what he is! Finally, the King of Spain, Juan Carlos, could not take it anymore and told Chávez, żPor qué no te callas? or "Why don't you shut up?" Within hours the comment was being repeated all over radio and T.V. all over Latin America and Spain with most people siding with the king.

Well, the next week he insulted the President of Colombia and right after the referendum that he lost in Venezuela, he called the opposition sons of excrement, I'm using the "polite" word. Will he ever apologize for his words and behavior? I believe he will when hell freezes over!

Although he was elected democratically, he is trying very hard to become a dictator.

Yeah - I heard about the "Why don't you just shut up" comment. I've also heard that it has become a popular ringtone among the Hispanic crowd.

I wonder now what he will do after his precious referendum failed. It's not like him to just drop it with a simple, 'The people have spoken' and just walk away. Sooner or later, in some form, the other shoe will drop.

Yes, it is very popular all over Latin America. I read the Latin Press online and believe me, the reaction against Chávez and in favor of King Juan Carlos has been amazing, even by folks who do not particularly like the monarchy.

Oh, I already told you, he is calling the opposition "sons of excrement," and today the Holy Father sent a letter to the Cardinal Urosa telling him he is in solidarity with him. I'm now waiting for Chávez to hurl insults at the Holy Father in a very Catholic nation. Big mistake if he dares!

Give it time, and I'm sure the insults will come. The irony is, he can't go too overboard without losing a lot of credibility with the faithful Catholics who are in Venezuela.

Denise Lawson,

This is what I had read in Spanish but now it has been issued in English.

Papal Support
Benedict XVI expresses solidarity with besieged Venezuelan cardinal

Caracas, Dec 13, 2007 / 10:46 am (CNA).- Pope Benedict XVI has sent a brief letter to the Archbishop of Caracas, Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino, in which he expresses his “closeness and solidarity in this unfortunate circumstance,” after the attack by Chavez sympathizers against the cardinal on December 7.

Saw this gem this morning and thought I would add it since it seems to fit here...

I read it too and I believe I was absolutely correct when I began to say in Catholic Pages that the persecution would go beyond words to violent attacks on the Church. The Church is a mighty opposition to Chávez' dream of dictatorship, the dictatorship of the Left, and the only way he can advance his agenda is by silencing the Church.

One thing is as sure as death and taxes...When dictators take over a country, one of the first things they do is attack the Catholic Church. Stalin did it, Pol Pot did it, Hitler did it, Mao did it. Caesar did it. And Hugo is trying to do it.

It's all part of the war between Mary and the devil, as foretold in Revelation 12. Except for China, all of the despots above have fallen. And China will also fall soon. Hugo may or may not be successful. I hope Pope Benedict soon announces his trip to Venezuela and blesses the entire country.

Would that the Bishops and the Pope would consecrate the Church in China to the Blessed Virgin Mary ASAP !! We live in a Marian age, and the devil, while still strong, is on the run in many cases. He knows his time is short.

No Mary, no Jesus. Know Mary, know Jesus.

And either he gets thrown out of office by the Venezuelan Army, or the Army will facilitate his new dictatorship!
