The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, STL, president of Human Life International, (HLI) today called on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to fire Harry Forbes, director of the Office for Film and Broadcasting of the Conference, for his positive reviews of immoral or anti-Catholic films on the Conference's Catholic News Service (CNS).

Father Euteneuer said, "I refuse to believe that Harry Forbes, who gave such glowing remarks to the homosexual promo film Brokeback Mountain and the atheist indoctrination flick The Golden Compass, speaks in the name of our bishops. An employee who shames our bishops with reviews of this sort should be fired. He now has a track record and is not worthy to be a public spokesperson for any Catholic let alone the national conference of bishops. I urgently ask the bishops to correct this anomaly at the headquarters and restore the dignity of the conference, which has been sullied by this man."

According to Father Euteneuer, "There seems to be a decades-old pattern of embarrassment on the part of some USCCB subordinates and other lay officials when it comes to the teachings of the Catholic Church. All too often these scandals involve matters of homosexuality. In 1987 we had the document 'The Many Faces of AIDS' which was problematic on the use of condoms, then in 1997 the scandalous document 'Always our Children' so distorted Catholic teaching that it had to be rewritten after its release."

Father Euteneuer added, "Then in December, 2005, Forbes's review of Brokeback Mountain with its original 'L' rating for 'Limited' had to be corrected and reclassified as 'O' for 'Morally Objectionable.' The bishops have been embarrassed by their staff like clockwork for almost 20 years. Now, in December 2007, the bishops have had to withdraw Forbes's review of The Golden Compass from CNS after publication. After major scandals involving homosexual clergy, do we really need their movie reviewer now tiptoeing around hostile atheism?

"Let Harry Forbes be the sign that the bishops can break the cycle of subtle and overt dissent among their subordinates. They should show him the door and require all other employees to take an Oath of Fidelity. That will separate the wheat from the chaff," concluded Fr. Euteneuer.

Grace,

"An employee who shames our bishops with reviews of this sort should be fired."

I agree, but I'm not so sure some bishops do not share with those reviewers the same sentiments and that's why they don't dare fire them!

I am not sure what we would do without Fr Euteneuer--I hear very few voices other than his. I continue to be a big supporter of his.

How could the reviewer not be fired after he ok'd 'Brokeback Mountain'???

Well, as it turns out, the Pullman books were on the shelves of some of our district's Catholic schools. The religion rep has asked that they be taken out until they can review the books. And already, some of the teachers are defending the book in the same manner that Harry Forbes did in his original review.

Anway, my wife is going to give the religion rep a copy of the Catholic League's booklet "The Golden Compass - Agenda Unmasked". I don't think the "liberal" teachers in the district will be able to defend the books after having this booklet read to them.

It's a real eye-opener, including passages from the books and also statements made by Pullman himself such as, "I am all for the death of God"; and this confession, "My books are about killing God."

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when the teachers who defended his books try to explain away statements like that! Thankfully, the district religion rep takes her faith seriously and I'm quite sure after having read the booklet she will have Pullman's crap pulled off the shelves permanently.

Here's the link to the booklet if you'd like to have a look.

I agree too, and I think complain loudly and consistently is what we should do every single time a bishop or one of their representatives steps out of line when it comes to Church teachings. If the complaints are loud enough and consistent enough, I suspect not even the liberal dissenters will stand against them too long. Far too many of them do not like the controversy, so they'd rather cave to avoid it.

Fr. Euteneuer is simply awesome. The only problem with priests like him is that there doesn't seem to be enough of them. Hopefully that trend will change.

Somehow I'm not surprised

Are they defending them because of their liberal stance on everything, or is it because they are really that poorly catechized? Perhaps a combination of the two?

It's a real eye-opener, including passages from the books and also statements made by Pullman himself such as, "I am all for the death of God"; and this confession, "My books are about killing God."

Hmmmm....he doesn't believe God exists, yet he is all for the death of God, whom he claims doesn't exist. How, exactly, does something that is non-existant die?

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when the teachers who defended his books try to explain away statements like that! Thankfully, the district religion rep takes her faith seriously and I'm quite sure after having read the booklet she will have Pullman's crap pulled off the shelves permanently.

Here's hoping.

I'm shocked! You change my sexual orientation! You called me Antonia, and only women have that name in the Hispanic world, I'm Antonio!

In my estimation, Denise, it's very likely a combination of the two. The most vocal of them has also in the past expressed the opinion that the Church is in some way wrong regarding its teachings about homosexuality.

The teaching situation at our public Catholic schools is not exactly ideal. Many of the teachers have a kind of cafeteria approach to the faith. You know, they think mass attendence on Sundays is optional; confession pretty much unnecessary; teachings on sex all across the board pretty much outdated, archaic; and I would dare to guess that they likely think we should have women priests, too. I mean, why not, eh?

Anyway, it is quite sad really. I don't think the system here will stand much longer. Several of our other provinces at one time had the same type of Catholic system we have here in Alberta, and they became watered down to the point where there wasn't a heck of a lot of difference between Catholic school and public school. And so, they were dissolved, leaving only the public system or private Catholic schools.

Grace,

Apology accepted. Italians, Portuguese, Hispanics, will never make this mistake because it is part of the structure of their language, but English speaking folks do make it often.

Ken,

I agree that it is more than likely a combination of the two. Sad how that works.
