Vatican paper criticises 'anti-Christmas' film 'Golden Compass'

VATICAN CITY (AFP) — The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano has criticised the children's film "The Golden Compass" starring Nicole Kidman, calling it "anti-Christmas."

Co-starring British actor Daniel Craig, the film is a "fantasy saga with 1960s sauce," the paper said in its Tuesday evening edition.

"The fact that the film earned only 25 million dollars in box office on the first weekend is a consolation," L'Osservatore Romano said.

The movie, an adaptation of "The Northern Lights," the first book in British author Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" fantasy trilogy, has been criticized by Christian groups as being anti-religious.

It led the US box office on its opening weekend December 8-9, garnering 26.1 million dollars (18 million euros), but fell short of expectations for such a high-budget production.

The film, packed with special effects, cost 150 million dollars to make.

L'Osservatore Romano said Pullman advocates "a totally atheist ideology, the enemy of all religions, traditional and institutional, and of Christianity and Catholicism in particular."

The film tells the story of an orphan living in a parallel universe in which a dogmatic dictatorship -- the Magisterium, which also refers to the teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church -- threatens to dominate the world.

Criticism from some religious groups led to a watering down of religious elements in the film, to the dismay of secular organisations and fans of the book trilogy.

I like Yahoo's take:

Vatican blasts "Golden Compass" as Godless and hopeless

By Philip Pullella Wed Dec 19, 8:31 AM ET

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Wednesday condemned the film "The Golden Compass," which some have called anti-Christian, saying it promotes a cold and hopeless world without God.

In a long editorial, the Vatican newspaper l'Osservatore Romano, also slammed Philip Pullman, the bestselling author of the book on which the family fantasy movie is based.

It was the Vatican's most stinging broadside against an author and a film since it roundly condemned "The Da Vinci Code" in 2005 and 2006.

I thought Kidman was a Catholic? Or at least from this article returning to Catholicism?

SYDNEY, Australia – Preparation for actress Nicole Kidman and country singer Keith Urban's June 25 wedding has helped guide her back to the Catholic Church, said a priest who knows her.

ACTRESS NICOLE KIDMAN – Nicole Kidman is introduced as a goodwill ambassador at the United Nations in New York Jan. 26. The 39-year-old Kidman, who was raised a Catholic, was married in a June 25, 2006, Catholic wedding to country singer Keith Urban in Australia. (CNS/Reuters)

"For Nicole, you know this is a spiritual homecoming, coming back to the church and her faith in her old parish," said Jesuit Father Paul Coleman, a longtime friend of the Kidman family who advised them on the annulment of Kidman's marriage with Tom Cruise.

Gscheid,

"I thought Kidman was a Catholic? Or at least from this article returning to Catholicism?"

If Kidman is a Catholic, I'm John Paul III and Madonna is a nun!

Nicole Kidman is a Catholic, but she certainly doesn't act like one. She married a Scientologist, Tom Cruise, she romped naked in Eyes Wide Shut for all of the world to see, and now she appears in an Atheist Christmas movie for kids.

If you call what she does beauty. And personally, I don't really think she's all that physically attractive either - but then again, bottle blonds just never did do it for me.

Denise - Take it from me - She's beautiful. However, her movies really stink.

Well, what would you call a woman or man who gets their hair color out of a bottle instead of being happy with what God gave them?

Hi Denise Lawson,

"Well, what would you call a woman or man who gets their hair color out of a bottle instead of being happy with what God gave them?"

Somebody who is willing to "improve" what God gave them!

When it's an improvement, yes. Too often, though, it is not because they either don't do it well or they don't select a color that is appropriate for their skin tone, so it doesn't look natural.

I worked with a woman who was a bottle blond, but the only reason I knew it was because she mentioned it - she was very careful to keep her roots touched up, and the color she chose suited her complexion. She was actually a very beautiful blonde. Kidman, in my mind, is not precisely for the reason her hair color is not appropriate for her complexion. However, this is just my opinion.

Denise Lawson,

"However, this is just my opinion."

Well, you know I don't have an opinion on anything other than the fact that someone who is dealing with Scientology, makes anti-Catholic films, goes around naked in a movie, is not my idea of a "Catholic," but hey, I'm not judgmental.
