We're at a parish now where we don't get any of the good old hymns we used to when we were out on the west coast at the cathedral.
This is a pretty big disappointment, as we get a pretty steady diet of modern/pop/70's kind of punishment every week. Advent is proving to be no different, and the music, for us, is sadly inadequate compared to some of the things we've liked in the past.
One of my favourites, that we will frequently sing at home in the evenings of Advent is "O Come Divine Messiah." But as that song has it's origins in 16th century France, we can be pretty sure we'll never hear it here.
Another, of which we have a snowball's chance .... of hearing, is "The Angel Gabriel".
It has old Basque origins, so it's pretty much out, too. But what a beautiful song. I was telling the kids this morning on the way to school (we always say the Angelus on the way) that this time of year was such a good time to say the Angelus, and that the song we sing often at home during Advent, "The Angel Gabriel", has some words that we find in the Angelus, too.
Anyway, great songs. Would like to hear them in church this year, but we'll keep them alive here at home during evening prayers. Glo-o-o-o-or-i-a!
So, what are everybodies' favourites during Advent?

Well, today I had a nice surprise. Our town has a fairly substantial French Canadian comunity and on Sundays there is a mass said in French and two in English. Also, every Friday morning at 9 am there is a French mass.
I usually attend the Friday French mass as it's the only one on Friday's. I've even learned how to say the Our Father en francais.
Anyway, this morning's processional and recessional hymn was "Venez, Divin Messie", sung, of course, in French. "Venez divin Messie/ Nous rendre espoir et nous sauver!/ Vous etres notre vie/ venez, venez, venez!" Oh thank you, Jesus. I love that hymn.
Well, our parish is named St. Louis de France, so I shoulda thought they might sing an old French tune!
I've been to the Sunday morning French mass twice, I think, in the last year and a half, and I've noticed that their music is much more traditional (synonym - beautiful) than the others. But, none of us are French speakers so it's not the greatest for the family.
Still, nice to hear, and sing, that hymn this morning. I can read a fair bit of French so, if I hear the page number right, it's fun to sing along. Reading and conversing, though, are two totally different things for me!

Our parish music meister has eliminated all really nice Advent hymns. We don't even get O Come O come Emmanuel anymore. Instead we get some wierd thing where the congregation sings some refrain over and over (Come come Emmanuel, o come Emmanuel) while the cantor sings something that is rendered into complete babbling by the sung refrain. I can't understand anything the poor man is shouting up there for the hubbub around me.
I'd love to hear Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence or some other grand piece like that, but instead we get some chirpy thing. Or, we get the melody of Let all Mortal Flesh, with rather bad lyrics and nothing approaching the majesty of the original. Too bad.

I heard a very talented choir yesterday on EWTN singing "Let All Mortal Flesh". Just beautiful. That's another favourite.
I feel for you guys, Shana. And I know what you mean about the "new" lyrics" to Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. So sappy. Really degrades the original, in my view.

After Mass this morning, my dear husband inquired, "Was that last hymn being sung to the tune of "Old Smokey??" Might as well laugh as cry. It's not going to change any time soon... Jennifer Jaeger |
