Dear friends, I kept thinking, "How long will it be before the famous theologian attacks Benedict XVI." Well, I didn't have to wait for a long time.

Pope Benedict attacked by Catholic Church’s most senior theologians

By Malcolm Moore
Last Updated: 10:41PM BST 22/05/2008

One of the Catholic Church’s most senior theologians, and former mentor to Pope Benedict XVI, has launched a stinging attack on the Vatican.
Father Hans Küng, 80, a Swiss priest and professor at Tübingen university said it was a “tragedy” for the Catholic Church that Rome had failed to follow the path of liberalisation set out by the Vatican II council in 1965.

Saying Hans Kung attacks the Pope is like saying the New York Yankees play baseball.

Before all things and above all things,
care must be taken of the sick,
so that they will be served as if they were Christ in person;
for He Himself said, "I was sick, and you visited Me" and, "What you did for one of these least ones, you did for Me"

And did anybody else notice the tabloid-like lies in that article?

It wasn't theologians, plural - it was one.

And it would be a stretch to call Hans Küng Catholic, even by liberal standards. Perhaps a more appropriate title would be "Catholic" dissident.

I can go on, but I'll be nice. Diogenes had an interesting commentary on it, where he beat me to many of the same points I noticed, and a few that I hadn't because I never gave them much thought. I see Hans Küng and complaint/attack in the same sentence and the first thought in my mind is - so what's different this time?

Still - so nice of the Telegraph to prove it's untrustworthiness so blatantly. Most yellow journalists are much more subtle.

Hi Denise Lawson,

"Diogenes had an interesting commentary on it, where he beat me to many of the same points I noticed, and a few that I hadn't because I never gave them much thought."

Thank you for pointing this out. I have not read Diogenes in a while. I'm on my way there!

Denise Lawson,

You're quite welcome.

The reason the attack surprised me is because Hans had met with the Pope at the beginning of his pontificate and "seemed" to be more accepting of Papa Ratzinger, so Hans' words now reflect, in my opinion, a profound dislike of this Pope and his teachings.

Go to Catholic World News, http://www.cwn.com and look at the column entitled "off the record". It requires a subscription, but if you don't mind the expense, CWN is well worth the read.

Pro-life Sarah,

"WHere can Diogenes be read? I hadn't heard of him...."

Denise Lawson already provided the link and indeed it is by subscription but the part written by Diogenes, "Off the Record" is free.
I love Diogenes because he is as cynical as me but definitely writes much better than I ever could.
