MARY MOTHER OF GOD

Throughout the New Testament one finds references to Mary.

In fact, at every significant juncture in our Lord's life,

one finds Mary on the horizon.

When God began His plan for our redemption,

He sent to Nazareth an angel, who hailed a woman as

"highly favoured" or "full of grace" to be the

human partner in this divine enterprise (cf Lk 1:28).

When the Babe was born in Bethlehem,

He came forth into our world not from heaven but from the womb

of the Virgin Mary (cf Mt 1:25; Lk 2:7).

As the Child was presented to the Lord in the Temple of

Jerusalem on the fortieth day,

the old prophet Simeon singled out His Mother Mary for s

pecial mention as a woman destined to be

the Mother of Sorrows (cf Lk 2:35).

Twelve years later, after another temple visit,

the Boy Jesus returned with His Mother and foster father to

Nazareth and was subject to them (cf Lk 2:51).

It was Mary who prodded her Son into action

at Cana to work His first miracle,

launching Him on His public ministry (cf Jn 2:3).

Mary stood by His side at the foot of the Cross

and was given to John as the Mother of the Church

(cf Jn 19:26f).

Finally, as the Church was waiting to be born

in the Upper Room, while the disciples prayed for the Pentecost

gift of the Spirit, Luke tells us that Mary

was in their midst (cf Acts 1:14).

Ecce Mater Dei

"Behold the Mother Of God"

Pray the Rosary and wear the Scapular Daily.

I will put enmity between you and the woman,

between your seed and her seed,

she shall bruise your head,

and you shall bruise his heel." (Genesis 3s:15)

"A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven:

A woman clothed with the sun,

with the moon under her feet

and a crown of twelve stars on her head."

(Revelation 12:1)

Mother of God, Marian Apologetics
I had an interesting discussion with a fellow online over his opposition to the Catholic title of Mary, “Mother of God.” Most people do not understand the Catholic position. But really the logic is very simple. Everyone would acknowledge the following to be logically true, as sound as 2+2=4:

I ate a piece of apple.
An apple is a fruit.
Therefore, I ate a piece of fruit.

The logic is just as simple and fundamental.

Mary is the mother of Jesus.
Jesus is God.
Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God.

If one accepts the first two premises, the conclusion simply follows. If one doesn’t accept the conclusion, one must be having difficulty accepting either of the premises. So one or two biblical truths risk rejection. Fr. Matthias Scheeben puts it in perspective:

No one need fear that the honor of God and Christ will be infringed by stressing Mary's divine motherhood. But great danger threatens the honor of Christ, where His Mother is not gladly and loudly proclaimed Mother of God. As the Nestorians opposed this title because they did not acknowledge Christ as true God, so Protestantism has slowly lost the full knowledge of the divinity of Christ because it has refused to Mary the honor due to the Mother of God, supposedly for the sake of God and Christ.
Mariology, Vol. 1, Matthias Joseph Scheeben, (1945) p. 139.
