Dear Parishioners, Whenever I’m out driving I’m amazed at the number of people who put bumper stickers on their cars. I just don‘t get it someone will spend $30,000 on a beautiful new SUV and somehow will feel compelled to plaster an 89-cent sticker on it and the things that people feel they need to announce to the world bewilder me. One I saw the other day got my attention, even though I had seen it before. As I pulled up to a stoplight, the car in front of me greeted me with these words: JESUS IS THE ANSWER! That’s what it said. JESUS IS THE ANSWER! All could think was, “What’s the question?” I’d like to see what would happen if a student, struggling with a question on the SAT, wrote down the word “Jesus” on the answer sheet I’m pretty positive that he or she would not get credit for it (though it might get a laugh). Clearly, Jesus isn’t the answer to everything. I get irritated by simplistic answers to matters of faith. They drive me crazy, and frankly don‘t make much sense to me. But the bumper sticker did make me wonder a little bit more about faith. Does faith have easy answers? Is it simple or complicated? Difficult or easy? Black and white or gray? A certainty or a great unknown?
