Hi JohnF,
"Among the United States' 70 million Catholics, 74 percent of American Catholics said they had a favorable opinion of the pope."
Call me a cynic John, but once the secular newsmedia begins to tell the American public how "rigid" and "conservative" this Pope is, and how he wants to "reverse" Vatican II, etc, the favorable rating will drop like a hot potato. If I'm wrong, well, we are just about to find out, aren't we?

In Europe, the Pope becomes more popular with every media attack. Why wouldn't the people here react the same way?

Perhaps part of it depends on whether they see it as an attack or not. If the press is subtle enough in their approach, they may be able to dupe quite a number of folks.

Dupe. Yes. You might be right.
After all, there are millions of people who believe the Di Vinci Code is non-fiction.

With all the liberal church bashing that takes place on many Catholic forums (never on this one), it doesn't seem to me that respect and allegiance for anyone in the Church is going to happen before the Pope arrives in America.
It's a shame that some of us have forgotten how to support God's Catholic Church. Despite the faults of human beings, it still is God's only Church.
So, if we don't have respect and allegiance, we can at least love.

We shall have to step it up.
But seriously, it isn't "liberal" church bashing ("liberal" and "conservative" are political terms that don't properly apply). Rather, there is obedience and disobedience. Calling it "liberal" is a deception that makes disobedience sound like a matter of preference than a matter of right or wrong. "Conservative" likewise, doesn't equate with obedience (PPX folks are conservative afterall). |

there is obedience and disobedience.
Remaining in a parish that is damning its parishioners to hell with disobedience and false teaching would be a serious mistake.
If there were parishes like this, I'd pray for the Vatican to rush in and wash out the dirty dudes.
If the Vatican didn't fix the problem, I guess I would try going to an Eastern Orthodox Church.

I dont much care for labels as well but perhaps calling some liberal or conservative better than saying those out of line with the Church and those in-line with the Church. Example--can you be pro-choice and Catholic? Perhaps if catholic politician in the US?

OK. That's true. But we share a lot of the same emotions, although I have been told they have tails and pointed ears over there.

That was April 7.
Do you think it might be higher than 74% today?

I'd think there is a bunch of people kicking themselves for missing out on the 'Truth' for so long.
EWTN has some great vignettes from a group called Catholics Come Home--very well done.

In less than three weeks, 3,000 Catholics returned to the Church in the Diocese of Phoenix due to the effort of a new lay apostolate, CatholicsComeHome.org.
The program consists of a website and commercials aired on local television that effectively portray the truth and goodness of the Catholic Church.
The commercials aired on television are produced by
http://www.CatholicsComeHome.org.
Seventy-eight of the 100 participants had positive responses to the ads. In another assessment, the organization found that before watching the videos, 90% of the participants had negative impressions of the Catholic Church. After viewing ads one time, 54% had a much more favorable impression. Hearts and minds were changed after viewing these creative and inspired ads.
