Anyone hear any different information about the Pope's visit? Eager to get tickets to at least the DC or the NY visit.

Tickets
Thank you for your interest in obtaining tickets to attend the upcoming Mass that our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, will celebrate in Washington, DC during his Apostolic Journey to the United States.
The Archdiocese of Washington has not finalized plans for distribution of tickets to the April 17 event, to be held at Nationals Park. In the past, the custom for major events has been to distribute tickets primarily through our parishes, dioceses and organizations with whom we collaborate in the pastoral care of the local Church.
Once a decision on ticket distribution is made, the information will be publicly announced here, through parishes and dioceses, and the media. http://www.adw.org/papalvisit/tickets.asp

Hi GScheid,
"Anyone hear any different information about the Pope's visit? Eager to get tickets to at least the DC or the NY visit."
What I have heard is that it is difficult to get tickets. I was hoping to go with my wife to Washington to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to see him, but I understand that only church dignitaries will be able to see him there and I don't want to go into a stadium to see him.

Hi GScheid,
I just read this,
US Papal visit plans consider security threats, ticket scalpers
Washington DC, Jan 9, 2008 / 08:05 am (CNA).- Those planning Pope Benedict XVI’s April visit to New York are considering security concerns, the logistics of stadium seating, and the threat of ticket-scalping at the Papal Mass, the Washington Post reports.
The District of Columbia will be tightly controlled for the first papal visit to the city in 29 years. Unlike John Paul II’s visit, in which the late Pope stood in a convertible and waved to crowds, Pope Benedict will not proceed through the streets in a public motorcade. He is scheduled to visit both the White House and Catholic University, but he will only appear in public for a Mass at the Washington Nationals stadium.

Not good enough for me, I'm in Los Angeles, not in Baltimore. I guess I'll have to watch the whole thing on EWTN!

PAPAL VISIT
Tickets to Ballpark Mass To Go to 120 Area Dioceses
About 120 Catholic dioceses outside of the Archdiocese of Washington will receive 14,000 tickets to the Mass to be celebrated April 17 by Pope Benedict XVI at the Nationals ballpark.
Of those, the biggest share will go to the Diocese of Arlington, which will receive 6,000, archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Gibbs said yesterday. The Archdiocese of Baltimore will receive 2,500.
Gibbs said the Archdiocese of Washington, which controls the ticket distribution for the Mass, will announce the ticket allocation Friday to parishes that are part of the archdiocese.
Each parish will receive tickets based on the size of its Mass attendance and whether it has a school or significant religious education program, she said. Parish priests will decide how the tickets will be distributed.

Pleas for Tickets to Papal Mass Inundate Archdiocese
By Jacqueline L. Salmon and Michelle Boorstein Washington Post Staff Writers Friday, February 29, 2008; A01
With seven weeks until Pope Benedict XVI lands in Washington, the hunt is on for one of the hottest tickets of the year: to the Mass he will offer at Nationals Park on April 17.
Pleading letters and e-mails are flooding into the offices of parish priests. Requests for tickets are appearing on eBay and Craigslist. Diocese officials are fielding phone calls from desperate Catholics as far away as Australia. All to be one of the 45,000 people who will crowd into the stadium for his celebration of the Eucharist. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/28/AR2008022804216_pf.html

Gscheid,
Pleas for Tickets to Papal Mass Inundate Archdiocese
I'm afraid I will have to watch the whole thing on EWTN and I hope they have a wonderful coverage. I'm particularly interested in knowing what the Holy Father will say to our ecclesiastical wing of the Democratic Party, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and what he will say to the Disunited Nations!

GScheid,
"And especially those running our 'Catholic' schools and universities"
Don't get me going. Most of our so-called "Catholic" universities should had been declared non-Catholic by our bishops given the hot bed of dissent they have become, yet, our bishops do nothing about it to kill that cancer. In the meantime unsuspected Catholic parents keep paying thousands of dollars to make sure the universities undermined the faith and the loyalty of students for their church and country. Lovely!

Fr Groeschel tonight mentioned this is one of his pet-peeves and mentioned a few schools he is not happy with. I guess older broadcast tonight since he didnt mention the Pope was coming over to speak with some of these folks. Here is a list of some of the Good Guys:
The first group is characterized by a Catholic identity that permeates all areas of campus life; the second includes institutions founded or expanded in the last few years; and the third group represents older colleges and universities that have succeeded in renewing and strengthening their Catholic identity.
The "Joyfully Catholic" colleges are: Christendom College, The College of Saint Thomas More, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Magdalen College, Thomas Aquinas College, The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, University of Dallas, and the University of St. Thomas (Houston, TX.).
The "Born from the Crisis" colleges are: Ave Maria University, Holy Apostles College & Seminary, John Paul the Great Catholic University; Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy, Southern Catholic College and Wyoming Catholic College.
The "Fighting the Tide" colleges are: Aquinas College (Nashville, TN.), Belmont Abbey College, Benedictine College, The Catholic University of America, DeSales University, Mount St. Mary's University and St. Gregory's University.
In addition to in-depth profiles of the 21 colleges, The Guide includes essays from prominent Catholic leaders. Among the clergymen are Archbishop Elden Curtiss of the Archdiocese of Omaha, NB., noted writer and spiritual director Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., and author and evangelist Father C. John McCloskey III.
Prominent lay contributors are philosopher Peter Kreeft, Cardinal Newman Society founder and president Patrick Reilly and Eileen Cubanski, co-founder and executive director of the National Association of Private Catholic and Independent Schools.

Interesting list. I know for a fact what some of the Catholic colleges are teaching - moral relativism. Scary thought! I agree that there are some that are Catholic that aren't catholic for sure!

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will travel to Washington to attend a private prayer service and meeting with the 350 bishops of the United States on April 16 in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The bishop will concelebrate Mass offered by the Holy Father at the new Nationals Park in the Washington, D.C. This will be the first non-baseball event held in the park, and will be attended by Catholics from across the country. “I am truly looking forward to it,” said Bishop Tobin. “An opportunity to be with the Holy Father is always a blessing and especially since he’s making the pilgrimage here, I’m sure that his message will have great relevance for the bishops who are there and for the church in the United States in particular.
“I think that it is important for us to see this visit as an opportunity for spiritual renewal for the church throughout the United States — for our dioceses, for parishes, for schools,” he added.
“While the Holy Father is visiting just two cities — and there are many public events in those two cities — he’s making a pastoral visit to the church in the whole of the United States so I would hope that all of our people would see this as a gift to them, as a visit to them, and this would be an occasion for us to renew our faith and to renew our Catholic practice.”
Bishop Tobin will be accompanied by 200 pilgrims from the diocese to attend the Yankee Stadium Papal Mass, including "50 Knights of Columbus, representatives of youth ministry, diocesan employees, and faculty and students" from local schools. During the mass, special recognition will be given to "the 200th anniversary of the Baltimore Archdiocese’s designation as an archdiocese, as well as the founding of four other dioceses — Boston, New York, Louisville and Philadelphia."

Michael Martine - "The Dunwoodie Disciple" The Dunwoodie disciple Westchester County Business Journal March 20, 2008. Bill Fallon interviews Father Michael Martine, professor of canon law and seminary procurator (overseer) who is heading "an army of 40 or 50" in readying Yonkers' St. Joseph's Seminary for the papal visit and youth rally:
Martine – pronounced martini – is 37. He cited confidentiality regarding the visit’s budget, but noted it possesses planning elements unique to the pope’s world: 500 chalices are needed and confessionals for the repentant must be built. Without noting we are all sinners, Martine pointed out the broad plaza area that will be filled with confessionals. It seemed a lot were planned. “We’re hoping people will want the sacrament,” Martine said. The super-modern stage is something to make Aerosmith pea green with arena envy. There will be “name entertainment” – Martine’s phrase – during the five-plus hours the youths fill the campus. And there will be at least something of the atmosphere of a festival, with, as Martine said, “hamburgers, hot dogs, T-shirts and religious articles for sale.”
Benedict will be celebrating his 81st birthday on April 16th at St. Joseph's, with "a girl’s choral group singing “Happy Birthday” in the pope’s native German."
The article mentions some interesting historical details about the seminary:
A chair handmade in Yonkers for Pope John Paul II’s St. Joseph’s visit in 1995. It still retained John Paul II’s seal as of March 7. But it is now to be refitted with the seal of Benedict XVI. Martine is a born raconteur and he offered an anecdote surely little-known outside the world of Vatican insiders: Pope John Paul I, who served only 33 days as pope in 1978, changed the etiquette of the papal seal as one of his few acts. It would no longer feature a crown. John Paul II’s papal coat of arms – prominently supporting the Virgin Mary – will be replaced by Benedict’s, which features a bear, a nod to the forests of his native Germany, Martine said. “And there will be no crown.”
An Irish penal chalice: The mass’ sacred cup harks to Christ’s last supper; this Elizabethan version was made to be quickly disassembled and hidden because priests caught celebrating mass could be hanged in 17th-century Ireland. The campus is also rich in statuary, with St Patrick and cornerstone-layer Archbishop Corrigan in line for a pre-pope power-washing and the flagpole slated for a fresh coat of paint.
