Fewer Good Friday steps for Pope Published: March 20, 2008 Pope Benedict will do less walking during the traditional Good Friday procession at the Colosseum opting to watch most of the service from a vantage point on a nearby hill.
Reuters reports Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi said the change was only a means for the Holy Father - who will turn 81 next month - to conserve his energy and was not an indication of poor health.
"It is reasonable that he would want to conserve his energy," Fr Lombardi said.
Instead of walking around the Colosseum for all 14 of the "Stations of the Cross" as he did in previous years, the Pope will watch most of the event from Rome's nearby Palatine hill.
He is expected to walk the procession for the last three stations.
No other changes in the Pope's hectic schedule in the four days from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday were planned.
