Dear Parishioners,
Whenever I’m out driving I’m amazed at the
number of people who put bumper stickers
on their cars. I just don‘t get it someone will
spend $30,000 on a beautiful new SUV and
somehow will feel compelled to plaster an
89-cent sticker on it and the things that
people feel they need to announce to the
world bewilder me. One I saw the other
day got my attention, even though I had seen it before. As I
pulled up to a stoplight, the car in front of me greeted me
with these words:
JESUS IS THE ANSWER! That’s what it said. JESUS IS THE
ANSWER! All could think was, “What’s the question?” I’d
like to see what would happen if a student, struggling with a
question on the SAT, wrote down the word “Jesus” on the
answer sheet I’m pretty positive that he or she would not
get credit for it (though it might get a laugh). Clearly, Jesus
isn’t the answer to everything.
I get irritated by simplistic answers to matters of faith. They
drive me crazy, and frankly don‘t make much sense to me.
But the bumper sticker did make me wonder a little bit
more about faith. Does faith have easy answers? Is it simple
or complicated? Difficult or easy? Black and white or gray?
A certainty or a great unknown?

Why have a beef with a Jesus sticker? I could see one of those Darwin fish or surely plenty of atheist stickers. Mark 40

Does he really have a beef with the sticker, or is he taking that stance to try to spur people to stop and think about their faith and about the questions he asks at the end? So many people today are practical atheists - Catholic and/or Christian for about one hour on Sunday and the rest of the week they go about their normal lives as though their faith doesn't matter or even exist - anything a priest can do to get them thinking and maybe acting on their faith beyond that one hour on Sunday surely can't be a bad thing.

Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like yours.
