Here is a meditation I wrote about the Second Joyful Mystery

Luke 1: 39-56. See also Genesis 18.
It is recorded of you, Most Holy Virgin, that after the Angel departed from you that you went "with haste" to the hill country of Judea. This is not the first time that Sacred Scripture records hastiness. The Holy Spirit has informed us about how our father in faith Abraham responded when he saw three men appearing near his tent by the terebinth of Mamre:-
When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them...Abraham hastened into the tent and told Sarah, "Quick, three seahs of fine flour...He ran to the herd, picked out a tender, choice steer, and gave it to a servant, who quickly prepared it....
Abraham moved at this breakneck pace not because it was the Lord who was visiting him, he did not know that it was, but because he perceived strangers in need and his faith impelled him to spend of his resources and his very strength to meet the necessities of those who had no other one to whom to turn. And you, dear Mary, in your haste to race to the assistance of St Elizabeth in her time of need showed yourself to be a true daughter of Abraham.

The Holy Patriarch found that in helping the stranger in need he was really offering service to God Himself. Help us too, Mary I pray, to offer the same service, without thought of reward, and to make the same discovery; God is revealed in our neighbour in need.

Father Abraham at this time proceeded to set another example for after generations to emulate. With a holy audacity he pleaded with God on behalf of others:-

While the two men walked on further toward Sodom, the LORD remained standing before Abraham.
Then Abraham drew nearer to him and said: "Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty?
Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it?
Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty, so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?"
The LORD replied, "If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."
Abraham spoke up again: "See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes!
What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?" "I will not destroy it," he answered, "if I find forty-five there."
But Abraham persisted, saying, "What if only forty are found there?" He replied, "I will forebear doing it for the sake of the forty."
Then he said, "Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?" He replied, "I will forebear doing it if I can find but thirty there."
Still he went on, "Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?" "I will not destroy it," he answered, "for the sake of the twenty."
But he still persisted: "Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten there?" "For the sake of those ten," he replied, "I will not destroy it."
The LORD departed as soon as he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned home.

And Mary, as Abraham's true daughter and Gods true mother your own holy audacity is without limit. You pray always for sinners and as Father Abraham's prayers so moved God how much more do yours, you who are so closely and lovingly linked to the mysteries of our Salvation made present at Bethlehem and Golgotha.

You, Immaculate Pure One, were thrice blessed by the Holy Spirit speaking through the mouth of St Elizabeth when only the sound of your voice was enough to open her heart to God Himself.
Most Blessed are you among women.
Blessed is the fruit of your womb.
Blessed are you who believed that what was promised by the Lord would be fulfilled.

When He spoke thus Lady did the Holy Spirit mean Blessed among some women? Did He perhaps mean Blessed among all first century Jewish women? No, dear Mary, He meant that you were and are Blessed among all women of all times and all places from the beginning of creation unto the very end. It has been Divinely Decreed that you are the Most Blessed creature and who is there that would deny you honour and love when you are honoured and loved as the foremost of creation by none other than Almighty God Himself.

Were you yourself excluded from the Blessing of the fruit of your womb? Was that flesh of your flesh and blood of your blood then alive and growing inside your own most pure body a wholly separate thing from yourself? He is both your Creator and your Son. You are His mother and His daughter. He is Lord and He is your unborn infant. He is both Omnipotent and radically dependant upon you O Mary. These two Blessings stand together. You are Blessed among women because the fruit of you womb is Blessed. The fruit of your womb is Blessed because His mother is spouse of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate.

These two Blessings are your unique privileges as Theotokos and gate of salvation. The third of the threefold benediction sees you once more as our model and exemplar. You are Blessed because you believed that the promise of the Lord would be fulfilled. It is certainly a unique faith in that it is called forth by a unique and singular promise. More than that though it is a clear sign to the faithful in all ages. You are Blessed because you believed without hesitations without reservations in Him who never lies and to Whom all things are possible. Pray for us too Holy Mother of God that we may have faith in the promises of Christ our Lord. Pray that this Blessing which the Holy Spirit pronounced over you through St Elizabeth will be also pronounced over us on that dread day when we finally and irrevocably stand before the judgement seat of our God.

Before all things and above all things,
care must be taken of the sick,
so that they will be served as if they were Christ in person;
for He Himself said, "I was sick, and you visited Me" and, "What you did for one of these least ones, you did for Me"

And what can be said, sweet Mother, of that beautiful response of yours to the threefold blessing of the Holy Spirit? That paean of praise the Magnificat that shows us all how we should give thanks and praise to our Great God.

My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
It is an uncontainable joy that burst from your lips. It cannot be hid, it must be spoken. Devotion to the Lord is a living thing. It is no dead set of rules, no list forbidding this, prohibiting that. You, O Mary, teach us that it is rather the source and root of all rejoicing, it is the overflowing fountain of rejoicing it is the destination of rejoicing. Divine devotion is the one thing necessary to turn the world from greyness into full, vibrant, living colour.

He has...dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
And here is the opposite picture Lady. Man turned in upon himself imagining that he himself is the master and arbiter of his own destiny. In his arrogance of mind and heart he seeks to use people and things as instruments whose purpose is to fulfil his desires to sate his lusts. Ever anew his purposes are thwarted but, never learning, ever again he resumes his scheming. He is thwarted not because God sets Himself in opposition to his schemes but because the whole of Creation does. As it comes from the hands of its Creator God Creation does not exist as tool to be manipulated for selfish ends by the arrogant of mind and heart. It exists to give joyous service to and offer joyous praise of that same most lovable Creator God, our Father. Those who seek to pervert the things and creatures of Creation from their proper ends to egotistic, sinful, ones pervert themselves and do grave harm to each creature over whom they exercise power not as wise stewards but as wicked servants. Such persons are doomed to be unhappy themselves and the cause of unhappiness in others. It is as your Divine Son says, those who seek to save their life shall lose it and those who lose it for His sake and for the Gospel will save it. We do not make ourselves happy by grasping after service and love from others but by freely giving service and love to others in and through and for Jesus your Most Sweet Son and our Redeemer.

The hungry he has filled with good things the rich he has sent away empty.
You say so well and clearly in few words what I have stumblingly sought to say in many Mother, teacher of the Church. Those who empty themselves of self itself will be filled with Him. Those who are filled with self alone will be empty of Him who is All in All to All.

Mary remained with her about thee months and then returned to her home.
You are a companion not only at times of high drama and great excitement Mary. Often, indeed, we are only mindful of you and call out to you at times of stress and trial; and of course regardless of our past neglect you lovingly answer us. Yet you are not simply an Emergency Room Mother, you are our everyday life Mother too. In our daily lives, in the perhaps dull round, the drab routine you are our companion as you were that of Blessed St Elizabeth for all those weeks and days and hours. What did you talk about? What did you do? Surely you, Mary, were one who did the most ordinary things and filled them with extraordinary meaning, you who are transparent to God showed how His light fills all and can be seen in all if only we gaze upon it with the faith filled eyes of the heart. And you could do this because you were the God-bearer, the Logos of God was really and truly present, body and blood, soul and divinity wherever you were present Mary. In this once more you are our model most Blessed Theotokos. May we also carry the Word made flesh into the tiniest recesses, the most neglected corners of our daily round and in doing so may we too bathe them with the light of His saving presence.

Immaculate Mother of God, pray for us.

Before all things and above all things,
care must be taken of the sick,
so that they will be served as if they were Christ in person;
for He Himself said, "I was sick, and you visited Me" and, "What you did for one of these least ones, you did for Me"
